The Golden Rules

RSVP for meetings
This lets the featured author know how many snacks to bring, and ensures you have a place to sit when you arrive. If you're a member, you'll receive an email for each meeting with yes, no and maybe buttons. Just click one and you're done; it takes 5 seconds. If you're a new member, just show up (the RSVP feature is only available to members).

Bring your laptop
If you own a laptop, please bring it to group. Reading from the screen will save the featured author money and ink, and keep a lot of paper out of landfills.

Arrival & departure
We realize there are kids, dayjobs, and a smorgasbord of other distractions, but please try to arrive on time and stay through the end. This ensures that we can get started with the read as scheduled (6:45 sharp), and maximize the feedback each author garners from his/her workshop.

How to workshop your material

There are two ways to present your material to group:

In-progress workshop

On the first Monday of each month (this is flexible), three writers bring 20 pages of an in-progress script to put before the group and brainstorm ideas.

If you're interested in bringing an in-progress piece to group, look on the group calendar to see if there are any meetings already on the calendar with open slots. If there are, simply log into your Gmail, go to calendar, and edit that event. If there are no 20-page workshop slots already open, create a new calendar event.

Write Wade if you have questions.

Full script workshop

On the third Monday of each month (this is flexible), we workshop a completed, feature-length screenplay.

If you have a completed piece and want to put it before the group, read the instructions below on how to create the calendar event.

For more about the structure and format of these meetings, go here.

Create a NSW meeting

You will only do this when you are the featured writer (or one of the featured writers of a 20-page workshop).

Here's a step-by-step:

  • Go to Gmail and sign into your account
  • Click Calendar tab in top left corner of screen
  • Click Create Event in upper left (under the rainbow Google)
  • Enter event details:
    • Event title naming convention:
         - Full script = Author's "Title"
           - ex. Mike Haas' "I Love the Pirate Argh")
         - 20pg = 20-page workshop: Authors' names
           - ex. 20-page workshop: Jake, Joy, Joan
    • Date, time, and location
    • Under the "calendar" drop-down menu, make sure you choose "Noho Screenwriters Workshop"
    • Under "Description" make sure you type in your logline and genre (or 3 loglines & genres, if a 20-page workshop)
    • Under the "Add Guests" box at right, type nsw-writers@googlegroups.com and click "Add."
    • Note: No need to set "Reminders"; they have already been set as a default.
  • Click "Save" at the top of the page (your event won’t be created without this step)
  • A window pops up: "Send invitations?" Click "Send". You're done! The calendar has just invited everyone in the group, and will send reminders / RSVP requests the week before your meeting and the day before your meeting!

Check RSVPs or send meeting reminder

Note: The calendar will automatically send an RSVP request/reminder when:
  • The event is created
  • 1 week prior to the event
  • The day prior to the event
  • If details (location, time, etc) for your event are changed
You can also send a note manually, by group (just to members who have not RSVP'd, for example).

Here's a step-by-step:

  • Go to Gmail and sign into your account
  • Click Calendar tab in top left corner of screen
  • Make sure Noho Screenwriters Workshop is hi-lited in the My/Other calendars area at bottom left (just click it if it is not).
  • Navigate to your event. Note - your event may appear twice - once on your calendar (one color), and once on the NSW calendar (blue). Click on the NSW/blue one, then Edit event details. A new window opens.
  • Along right, you will see a report of RSVPs. Beneath is a detailed report by member. A check to the left of their email means they have RSVP'd "Yes", a ? = "Maybe", and X = "No"
  • If you want to send a note, click Email guests (along right above list of invitees). A new window opens.
  • Check/uncheck the appropriate (Yes, Awaiting responses) boxes, or manually delete email addresses you don't want to include.
  • Type message and click Send.
